Who we help
The Lutine Benevolent Fund aims to assist those in need who work, or have worked, in the Lloyd’s community, and/or their dependants.
Who qualifies
To be eligible for financial help from the Lutine Benevolent Fund, applicants must:
- have been employed in the Lloyd’s community for at least five years
- be in financial difficulty due to unforeseen circumstances, such as ill-health, unemployment, bereavement or a change in personal circumstances
- have limited financial means, both in terms of income and capital
For these purposes, Lloyd’s community is defined as
- registered Lloyd’s brokers
- Lloyd’s managing agents
- Lloyd’s members’ agents, or
- The Corporation of Lloyd’s
Dependants are spouses or civil partners and any dependant children in full-time education living at home.
If you are unsure whether you qualify, please contact our Secretary for a confidential discussion.
Underwriting Members of Lloyd’s are not eligible for support by the LBF.
Other charities which may be available to those who do not qualify for LBF support include: Turn2us and The Insurance Charity.

Our process
The application process will involve providing proof of employment and details of your personal circumstances. This will initially include brief details of your household income and expenditure. All information provided is handled with discretion, sensitivity and confidentiality.
Once your eligibility to apply for financial assistance has been established, our Secretary will send you application forms to complete. All applicants are required to be open, honest and transparent about their financial situation and any other factors which need to be taken into consideration. Applications are reviewed and due diligence conducted before a submission is made for Trustees’ consideration.
If you have any questions about the application process, or think you might have difficulty in providing the documents to establish your eligibility to apply to the Fund, please contact our Secretary, who will be happy to help and may be able to suggest ways in which you can find the necessary information.
Further details are available on request from our Secretary.
Examples of our support
The nature of our support will vary depending on the circumstances, but it could be a long-term grant for someone with little or no savings and whose income doesn’t cover their basic living costs, or short term/ one-off grants to help individuals with specific costs.
Examples where we have helped:
- An individual who was retired and living on a very modest pension who needed extra financial help with the cost of living.
- An individual who stopped work early through ill-health, did not qualify for their pension and had insufficient savings to live on.
- An individual made homeless through domestic break up and with no income to live on.
- An individual who was made redundant and needed financial support until securing employment. In similar circumstances, we helped an individual get back on the career ladder post-redundancy by paying for suitable clothes for interviews.
- Paying for replacement of white goods, basic furniture needs, home mobility equipment or essential property maintenance.
